Universidad Minuto de Dios (UNIMINUTO) is using technology to create connected campuses and provide a quality higher education for 110,000 students in Colombia, reaching a diverse population of talented young people from large cities to small towns.With student enrollment rising rapidly each year, UNIMINUTO in 2017 embarked on cloud-first IT modernization and digital transformation. Its goals were to deliver end-to-end digital services to students, faculty, and administrative staff across 68 locations, as well as to students in remote areas of Colombia reached through distance learning and virtual education.Affordability, simplicity, and business agility across IT systems are critical for the nonprofit university. UNIMINUTO is achieving those objectives with the help of Boomi and Boomi partner SQDM, an IT consultancy based in Bogotá with offices in the U.S. and Mexico.

Technology Challenges

UNIMINUTO recognized the need for data and application integration, but faced struggles with a legacy on-premises enterprise service bus (ESB). Total cost of ownership (TCO) was high in software licensing, hardware, maintenance, developers, and multiple administrators.In addition, UNIMINUTO encountered challenges with the speed and complexity of integration development across systems including SAP for financials, SAP SuccessFactors for HR, and an Ellucian Banner student information system (SIS). That increased maintenance costs, affected agility in delivering critical solutions, and made it difficult to find skilled development and administration specialists.With an ambitious agenda for ongoing digital transformation, UNIMINUTO engaged SQDM as a “strategic ally” in identifying an integration platform better suited to its goals of delivering seamless digital experiences to students and staff, while reducing costs and improving operational efficiency in IT and administration.

How Boomi Helped

With implementation by SQDM, UNIMINUTO has replaced its legacy on-premises middleware with Boomi to expand digital services for students and staff while dramatically improving IT productivity in developing and managing integrations.With Boomi, UNIMINUTO is powering online admissions and course enrollment, replacing what had been onerous paper-based processes for prospects, students, faculty, and administrative staff. The university has also digitized payments, financial settlement, and transcript access, saving manual work and accelerating cash flow. Integrations with a Moodle learning management system (LMS) and other apps are in the pipeline.In all, SQDM has engineered 47 points of Boomi integration across roughly 12 cloud and on-premises applications, including online student and teacher portals. Transaction processing times are 50 percent faster with Boomi while data accuracy has increased, improving efficiency and collaboration across the institution.
