General context

Cornell University, an Ivy League school with 15 colleges and schools in the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East, adopted a cloud-first modernization strategy to create a connected digital campus for its 23,000 students and nearly 10,000 employees.

Led by the Cornell Information Technologies (CTI) group, the modernization initiative focused on business objectives that included improving administrative efficiency, reducing costs, and providing a collaborative learning environment for students and faculty.

It also aimed to meet the high expectations of tech-savvy students, including Gen Z digital native students, to access course materials and other information through desktop, mobile, and social platforms.

The IT team faced a hurdle in the university’s journey to the cloud: it needed agile integration across new cloud applications and legacy systems that would remain in place within its hybrid IT environment.

The legacy on-premises middleware tool that CIT had been using for integration was not scalable. Not only was it a complex and time-consuming tool, but it also had high maintenance costs, was incompatible with the variety of cloud applications in Cornell’s IT modernization process, and had issues with stability and execution speed.

The university’s IT team evaluated several market-leading iPaaS products including Boomi in its search for cloud integration tools. Boomi was ultimately selected for its speed, ease of use, and comprehensive capabilities to deliver the full array of integrations needed to run in a hybrid IT environment.

How Dell Boomi helped

In just three months, the Cornell Information Technologies (CTI) group migrated all of its integration processes from on-prem middleware to Boomi. In contrast, the university would have required a year to switch integrations to the previously used middleware platform.

With Boomi, CTI was able to quickly build 37 integrations across its hybrid environment of best-of-breed cloud applications, and on-prem legacy applications.

“Boomi is powerful, easier to use and much more flexible than our previous integration tool,” says Dennis Frederick, an integrations developer at Cornell. “With the broad set of connectors in Boomi, we can easily integrate almost anything.”

The university is also using Boomi API Management to discover data from legacy applications and supports its modernized cloud and mobile environment.
